Motorists beware! Mont Blanc Tunnel completely closed

Since yesterday, 16.10.2023, the Mont Blanc Tunnel has been completely closed to traffic for 2 months. Drivers must be prepared for long detours and traffic jams.

The Mont Blanc Tunnel, one of the most important road links between France and Italy, has been closed for two months since Monday for maintenance work. This means that the average of 3,600 cars and 1,700 trucks that pass through the almost twelve-kilometre-long tunnel every day will have to find an alternative route until shortly before Christmas.

Since October 2020, traffic in the tunnel for trucks has already been regulated by driving bans anyway. There is a ban on older trucks passing through. Only those with Euro standards 5 and 6 are allowed.

For the next few months, it is no longer only older trucks that are barred. The operating company states that extensive work is necessary on the 60-year-old tunnel. For example, floor slabs in the middle section of the structure are to be renewed and the ventilation system replaced. From 18 December, traffic is expected to flow normally again.

Originally, construction work was scheduled to begin in September. However, the project was postponed due to a landslide at the Fréjus Tunnel, another important link between France and Italy.

The upcoming construction work on the Mont Blanc Tunnel poses a significant challenge to traffic between France and Italy. Drivers are asked to be prepared for delays and plan alternative routes until the work is completed and the tunnel is safe to drive through again.
