Noise protection zone
Do I need stickers or registrations?
No special sticker or registration is required to enter the noise protection zone. Only the appropriate decibel value must be observed. A fine of 220 euros is due for violations.
For the other (environmental) zones of Austria a valid Austrian environmental sticker (Umwelt-Pickerl) is mandatory. Otherwise a fine of up to 2180 Euro is to be expected.
How do I recognize the low emission zone?
The sign for noise protection zone shows a red prohibition sign on which a motorcycle is shown. In addition, there is also a note on the maximum decibel limit for stationary noise.
In our Green-Zones App we have a detailed map of each low emission zone. So you can easily recognize the borders and avoid penalties.
Are there other low emission zones in Austria?
Austria has a total of 7 different environmental zones. These are divided into normal environmental zones and noise protection zones: Außerfern, Burgenland, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria, Tyrol, Vienna.
In our Green Zones App we have gathered together all the low emission zones in Europe and presented them clearly.
Good to know...
All current driving bans and further information are available in our Green-Zones App.
Electric challenge of the logistics industry
Many countries have declared war on vans and trucks with combustion engines. Even newer combustion engines will soon no longer be allowed to enter some zones. The industry must act quickly.
Environmental zone chaos in Germany
Last year's air quality values are causing confusion in Germany. While some cities want to stick to driving bans because the data is not reliable due to the Corona pandemic, other cities are seizing the opportunity and abolishing driving bans and environmental zones. You do not attribute the success to the pandemic, but to the mobility concepts of the cities. Is this too hasty?
London significantly stricter on low emission zone
The driving bans in the British capital will be extended from this week. Almost all types of vehicles are affected by the diesel bans. Violations can be expensive.
Diesel driving bans in Stuttgart are not enough
The "Deutsche Umwelthilfe" continues to build up pressure on the city. Nitrogen oxide levels are too high in some places despite existing diesel driving bans. They demand that exemptions, especially for vans, be stopped.
Fine dust alert in Europe
Saharan dust caused particulate matter levels in Europe to skyrocket this week. In Switzerland, the speed limit on motorways was tightened. In France, the activation of the environmental zones was mostly too late. In some areas, they were dispensed with altogether despite the pollution.
Berlin to become a zero-emission zone
Berlin's urban area is to be closed to internal combustion vehicles. But after the draft law already stated 2030 as the implementation date, this deadline has now disappeared from the law. Implementation has thus been put on the back burner. But to when?
E-car pioneer weakens when it comes to charging
In Norway, more electric cars were sold last year than combustion cars. The country is far ahead in an international comparison. The success lies in the privileges. But the charging infrastructure is not up to scratch.
Soon noise protection zones in Germany
Motorbikes are clearly too loud - that's what measurements in Stuttgart showed. Politicians and citizens are calling for an end to this. Noise protection zones like the one in Tyrol could be a solution.
Strictest environmental zone in Europe
Berlin citizens have submitted a draft law that would virtually ban car traffic within Berlin's S-Bahn ring. According to the bill, not even electric cars would be allowed to enter. The initiative is likely to face a lot of opposition.
Netherlands shocks transport companies
The Netherlands is tightening up the rules on environmental zones enormously from 2025. No vans or trucks with combustion engines will be allowed in at least 14 environmental zones. Only purely electric vehicles will be allowed.
