France: Clermont-Ferrand to have an environmental zone

The central French city is ready for its first low emission zone. From 1 July, this will first come into force in Clermont and ban the traffic of vans and trucks without sticker 5 - or better.

There are almost 40 low emission zones in France, which regulate the traffic of vehicles with the highest pollutant emissions. But more and more cities are deciding - despite growing criticism of the environmental policy - to set up an environmental zone. Clermont-Ferrand in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region is also considering this step.

On 1 July, the new rules will come into force, initially only in Clermont. Small vans and light and heavy trucks will be affected. Vehicles of the classes N1, N2, N3 without a French environmental sticker may neither park nor drive in the zone. At least a 5 sticker is required to enter the zone and thus avoid fines. However, these will not be imposed until July 2024. For this first year of the low emission zone, only warnings are planned.

Also planned for January 2024 is the extension of the zone to Ferrand, with the aim of covering the entire urban area of Clermont-Ferrand. Tighter regulations, such as the ban on stickers 4 and 5 for vehicles of classes N1, N2 and N3, are planned for 2027.

Not to forget all the already active low emission zones in France - and in the rest of Europe. As always, all the information is available on our website and in the Green Zones app.
