Mannheim car-free as of today!

Mannheim is banning cars from the city centre, but only on a trial basis for the time being. More space is to be created for pedestrians and cyclists and the city is to be freed from noise and exhaust fumes.

A 140-metre-long pedestrian zone is being created in the so-called Fressgasse. At the Breite Straße level, a barrier has already been installed to keep out all cars and lorries.
At the beginning of April, Marktstraße will also be converted into a bicycle lane. After that, through traffic will be interrupted in Kunststraße in the direction of the water tower.

The city plans an initial trial period of one year. With this project, Mannheim joins many other cities such as Berlin, Paris and Barcelona that have already redesigned their city centres and initiated a traffic turnaround - for fewer cars and more pedestrians and cyclists on the streets.
