New driving bans in Tyrol

For the remainder of the winter season, driving bans will apply to alternative traffic on Tyrol's low-ranking road network. This is because the situation on the roads in the Austrian region still cannot be managed without traffic restrictions.

In order to counteract the massive evasive traffic during congestion situations, Tyrol is announcing driving bans again this year. With the start of the winter season 2022/23, they will namely come into force on the low-ranking road network in the districts of Kufstein, Reutte and Schwaz, as in previous years - and ensure that traffic flows are as trouble-free as possible. In general, the driving bans will be in force from 24.12.2022 to 10.04.2023 on Saturdays from 07:00 to 19:00, and on 30.12.2022 and 10.04.2023 from 07:00 to 19:00. Additional restrictions on Sundays and public holidays from 07:00 to 19:00 in Reutte and Kufstein are also planned.

Directly at the exits, motorists will have no possibility to avoid local traffic jams, unless they can be attributed to destination, source and neighbouring traffic. These are the only exceptions to the ban. As for all vehicles passing through - no matter if car, motorbike or truck - the driving restrictions will regulate the traffic flow on the selected days. Furthermore, additional metering traffic lights will be used as needed to monitor the road situation more carefully. The Tyrolean road supervisors will carry out spot checks and divert all vehicles that will be on the road without a permitted reason to pass back onto the main road network.

Only in this way will the province be able to guarantee safety on the local roads and the fluidity of traffic in the best possible way - as well as relieve the traffic-plagued population along the classic alternative routes. A self-defence measure, according to the Tyrolean provincial government, which is currently the only sensible option for the authorities. Otherwise the situation on the roads could only get worse. Especially since the increasing traffic density, in combination with road closures and ever more frequent traffic jams, could continue to cause congestion on the low-ranking road network.

However, the situation is regularly evaluated so that the authorities can make improvements if necessary - or even relax some restrictions on an ongoing basis. For the time being, however, they will be in force from next Saturday. In addition, all other driving bans active in Austria, such as those within the environmental zones, are not to be forgotten. As always, all information is available on our website and in the Green Zones app.
