In Glasgow, the one million pound mark has now been reached through the revenue generated by the low emission zone. More than 20,000 fines have been issued. Every day, an average of 182 drivers are caught in the zone without being registered, even though their vehicles do not comply with the rules. The city is now also cracking down on repeat offenders. Whereas in June, immediately after the new rules were introduced, only one fine was issued per vehicle, multiple offences are now punished several times over.
The rules for the many low emission zones in the UK are very different. Lorries and buses are affected in almost all zones. Vans are often affected but not everywhere. Cars are less frequently affected, but the number is steadily increasing. The cities in which cars need to be registered if they do not comply with the rules include Birmingham and Bristol, for example. But the rules go into even more detail: In Bath, for example, private cars are not affected by the low emission zones, but car hire vehicles need to be registered.
