Brenner & Inntal: Truck ban on German Unity Day

Due to the German National Day on 3 October, a special ban on lorries will also be imposed in Austria and southern Tyrol.

Next Monday, a ban on HGVs will be in force nationwide in Germany between 0:00 and 22:00. In order to keep the traffic situation under control outside the borders, a special driving ban will also be imposed on the Brenner and Inntal motorways on that day. As the Tyrolean regional police directorate announced on Wednesday, this will apply to trucks and articulated vehicles weighing 7.5 tonnes or more - as well as to trucks with trailers that also weigh more than 7.5 tonnes in total. Thus, the A12 and A13 will also become a goods transport-free zone between 0 am and 10 pm.

Further measures will also be enforced in order to prevent obstructions to travel caused by stopped lorries. Specifically, the parking of trucks on the hard shoulder of the motorways concerned will be prohibited in non-emergency situations. Unaffected instead will be other ordinary driving bans, such as the night driving ban. However, some exceptions are foreseen. According to the police, drivers with a proven residence or company headquarters in Austria will be able to reach their destination despite the driving ban - and wait for it there.

The authorities also point out that due to the ban on HGVs, increased heavy goods traffic is most likely to be expected the following morning. Additional metering measures to prevent congestion, for example on the stretch between Brenner and Schönberg and between Wörgl and Kufstein, will consequently be activated at 5 a.m. on Tuesday.

Furthermore, other active traffic restrictions should not be forgotten, such as the regulations of the environmental zones on both the German and Austrian sides. As always, all information is available on our website and in the Green Zones app.
