Attention low emission zones in Belgium: Up to 350 euro fine!

Belgium has drastically tightened its low emission zones for vehicles in major cities such as Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent since 2022, with further restrictions planned for 2025. Anyone driving in these cities must expect a fine of up to 350 euros. This regulation applies not only to local drivers, but also to foreign drivers. In all three cities, there is an environmental zone in which certain vehicles are not allowed to drive. Cameras monitor compliance with the rules by recording and comparing the licence plates of vehicles.

It can be particularly expensive in the Belgian capital Brussels. There is a ban on diesel vehicles of the Euronorm 0 to 4 and petrol vehicles of the Euronorm 0 and 1. From 1 January 2025, the ban will also apply to diesel vehicles of the Euronorm 5, with the exception of electric and hydrogen vehicles.

Drivers who are not registered in Belgium or the Netherlands and wish to enter Brussels must register their vehicle in advance. Vehicles that fall under the entry ban have the option of purchasing a day ticket for a maximum of eight days per year. A fine of 350 euros is payable for offences.

The cities of Antwerp and Ghent are somewhat more lenient than Brussels. In Antwerp, the low emission zone only extends to the city centre and the area to the left of the Scheldt. Petrol vehicles of Euro 2 to 6, diesel vehicles of Euro 5 to 6 and diesel vehicles of Euro 4 with a particulate filter are allowed to enter this zone.

The vehicle or licence plate must also be registered in Antwerp. However, this must be done within 24 hours of entry at the latest.

Anyone who cannot fulfil the Euro standards but still has to or wants to drive in, only has the option of buying a day ticket on site. These are limited to eight per year. If the driving ban is disregarded or the vehicle is not re-registered in good time, a fine of 150 euros will be imposed.

The tightening of environmental legislation in Belgium is a clear step towards more sustainable mobility. However, high fines and complicated registration procedures pose a challenge for motorists. We recommend that you inform yourself thoroughly before travelling to Belgium and take the necessary precautions to avoid fines.
