Attention! Driving bans in Tyrol

In addition to the existing strict environmental zone, an additional truck driving ban and four block clearance days on tomorrow's public holiday are planned for the Ascension week in Tyrol. Additional driving bans on main and secondary roads in the region are also planned for the coming months to dose traffic. Long traffic jams are to be expected in the Inn Valley and the rest of Tyrol.

Austria is again relying on widespread driving bans this year to get the large flow of traffic under control. This was announced by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy and Mobility during the publication of the current dosing calendar. Numerous block closures and driving bans for heavy goods vehicles have been decided for spring and summer 2023. These apply primarily to transport vehicles with a permissible total weight of more than 7.5 tonnes. These are in addition to the environmental zone that has been in place since 2016, which already includes a driving ban for all trucks in classes N2 and N3 that do not meet Euronorm 6. In addition, all trucks need the purple Euro6 sticker to be allowed to pass the A12 Inntal motorway.

When and where are the additional driving bans planned?

For Monday, 15 May, up to and including Friday, 19 May 2023, the Tyrolean regional government has planned four days of truck block closures at the Kiefersfelden/Kufstein border crossing. On the Ascension Day holiday, there is also a ban on HGV driving, which, in addition to traffic jams, could also lead to congestion at the rest stops along the motorway - for example on the A99 towards Salzburg, A8 towards Salzburg and A93 Inntal towards Innsbruck/Brenner. But the traffic situation could also remain tense after the holiday. Especially because, according to the ADAC's traffic jam forecast, individual traffic is expected to increase due to the long weekend. But also because for the rest of the month until 9 June another ten block clearance days will restrict freight traffic.

At the same time, further driving bans are planned in Austria for the coming months. In the direction of Italy, on the A1 Inntal motorway and the A13 Brenner motorway, truck driving bans will be in place on Saturday, 27 May 2023, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Friday, 2 June 2023, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Also active are truck driving bans on the A1 Inntal motorway and the Brenner motorway towards Germany. These driving bans are to apply every Saturday between 1 July 2023 and 26 August 2023, between 7am and 3pm.

In addition, additional driving bans on a further seven routes within Austria will affect traffic over the Brenner this summer. For example, on the B178, B320 and on the B 179 Fernpassstraße - as well as on the A4 Ost Autobahn from the Schwechat junction to the state border at Nickelsdorf - truck traffic would be banned for all Saturdays between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. between 1 July 2023 and 26 August 2023.

Not to forget the regulations of the other Austrian environmental zones. As always, all information is available on our website and in the Green Zones app.
