New environmental zone regulations in January 2023

The new year is barely a few days old, but already there are important changes in the environmental zones in many European cities. Because in the coming year, cities and municipalities are again planning to reduce traffic through low emission zone regulations and thus to control vehicle emissions more strongly. Green-Zones® lists the new rules for January.

France:

Nice
- Entry prohibited for trucks (N2, N3) and buses (M2, M3) with sticker 4, and for cars (M1) and vans (N1) with sticker 5.
- Two- and three-wheelers are not affected.
Strasbourg
- Vehicles with sticker 4 are banned from driving in the low emission zone.
Toulouse
- The driving ban for cars with stickers 4 and 5 now applies to all vehicle classes and no longer only to trucks and vans.
Reims
- Ban on sticker class 4 and 5. Two-, three- and four-wheelers are exempt.

Spain:
Madrid
- Permanent low emission zone becomes larger and now also includes the M-30 ring road.
- Only those with a Spanish sticker (Distintivo Ambiental) will be able to drive on the ring road.
- Even residents of the low emission zone within the M-30 are no longer allowed to drive in the zone without a sticker, but are still allowed to use the motorway.
Seville
- Two areas of La Cartuja (Cartuja North and South) are now subject to a mandatory sticker zone (Distintivo Ambiental).
- The zone is active from Monday to Friday, except public holidays, from 7:00 to 19:00.

Postponed were:

- The introduction of the sticker 3 ban in Paris. The new regulation should now come into force from July 2023.
- the establishment of environmental zones in all Spanish cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants. The new zones are to be introduced in the coming months. However, the regulations will initially only affect vehicles with Spanish number plates.
- the introduction of a ban on motorbikes without a sticker in Montpellier, France, will be postponed by one year to 1 January 24.

Also not to be forgotten are all the already active low emission zones in France and Spain - as well as in Germany and the rest of Europe. As always, all information is available on our website and in the Green Zones app.
