Environmental zone
Do I need stickers or registrations?
To enter the environmental zone, each vehicle concerned requires a valid Austrian environmental sticker (Umwelt-Pickerl). Otherwise, a fine of up to 2180 euros is to be expected.
How do I recognize the low emission zone?
The low emission zones are marked with two types of sticker. On the one hand, there is the mostly digital sign for speed restriction, which is usually seen on motorways. On the other hand, there is the sign for immission control - air. This shows a black circle similar to the prohibition sign with the remark IG-L. Who exactly is allowed to enter or not, is not visible from the entry sign.
In our Green-Zones App we have a detailed map of each low emission zone. So you can easily recognize the borders and avoid penalties.
Are there other low emission zones in Austria?
Austria has a total of 7 different environmental zones. These are divided into normal environmental zones and noise protection zones: Außerfern, Burgenland, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria, Tyrol, Vienna.
In our Green Zones App we have gathered together all the low emission zones in Europe and presented them clearly.
Good to know...
All current driving bans and further information are available in our Green-Zones App.
Driving bans in France: increase up to 1800% expected!
Paris 83 instead of 10, Marseille 89 instead of 5, Lyon 108 instead of 14. This is how many days with temporary driving bans will be in France from 2021.
Brussels Low Emission Zone: Penalties are illegal! Who gets their money back?
A complaint classifies the exemption for lorries in the Brussels low emission zone as discriminatory and could mean the end of the low emission zone. The city would then have to pay back all fines and day passes to the citizens.
Munich: 110 million euros to avoid diesel bans
A 365-euro ticket for public transport will improve the air in the Bavarian capital. It is unclear whether this expensive measure can really avert the unwelcome driving bans.
Asthma death from air pollution?
A London court is to decide whether the asthma death of a 9-year-old is directly attributable to excessive air pollution. The case could become a precedent with huge implications for environmental zones and driving bans.
Range test: petrol and public transport are significantly more expensive than diesel and electric
Which means of transport will get us the furthest for our money? A test shows why diesel vehicles are still so popular and that public transport is not an alternative for many people.
Barcelona bans all vehicles by 2030
The Spanish metropolis is to become completely car-free in 10 years. This would give the city the strictest environmental zone in Europe.
Climate killer: emissions scandal with plug-in hybrids
The vehicles emit up to 12 times more CO2 than the manufacturers claim. Some experts suspect cut-off devices which deliberately make the measured values appear low.
Environmental zones save 60,000 lives each year
Significantly fewer people in Europe die as a result of air pollution. Driving bans and cleaner cars contribute to this improvement.
Ludwigsburg fights against noise
40 km/h almost everywhere - the city brakes drivers against harmful noise pollution in the entire city area. This means they have to pay for the city's failure to take action.
Unbelievable! So much environmental zones and air pollution cost us
The consequences of air pollution cost Europeans up to €11,361 per person every year.
