Environmental zone of Bergen - Norway

Bergen is a port city founded in 1070 and lies on the Inner Byfjord on the west coast of Norway. With its 281,190 inhabitants, it is the second largest city in the country, a municipality in the province (Fylke) of Hordaland and its administrative centre.

The metropolitan area of Bergen has 378,830 inhabitants, of which 30,000 are students.
Mountains and fjords, including the Sognefjord, the deepest and longest fjord in the country, dominate the landscape. In the Bryggen district there are colourful wooden houses on the old landing stage, which was once a base for the mighty Hanseatic League. Today’s houses, destroyed by fire and rebuilt in the old style, date back to 1702 and are a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site.

The origins of this over 900-years old city go back to the Viking Age. As one of the Hanseatic League’s headquarters, Bergen has been the centre of prosperous trade between Norway and the rest of the world for several centuries. The old port front of Bryggen is the most significant remnant of this period.

Since 2012, a temporary air protection zone has been established in Bergen. This zone, which is only activated in case of poor air quality, is valid from Monday to Friday between 6 am and 10 pm.
Certain vehicle types, such as cars and motor homes, are banned from entering the zone if they have an even or odd number plate. Only the Green-Zones app shows which number plates are allowed to enter when the zone is activated and which vehicle types and EURO standards are currently prohibited.
