Wuppertal redeemed

The decision of last week is now official: there will be no diesel driving bans in Wuppertal.

The relief is palpable: there will be no diesel driving bans on the Wupper. However, certain measures will be taken to implement the clean air plan. For example, there will be reductions in speed in several places.

Lord Mayor Andreas Mucke analysed the situation in an interview with the Westdeutsche Zeitung: "I would like to thank all those involved for the constructive and goal-oriented discussions and the Münster Higher Administrative Court for its prudent moderation. With the settlement reached, Wuppertal will ensure compliance with the limit values without driving bans. The use of artificial intelligence in traffic control enables a flexible response to the respective traffic and pollution situation. Emissions can thus be reduced to stay below the limit values and make the air cleaner. Many other measures support our path of traffic turnaround towards sustainable mobility and better air for people. Measures to achieve this are recorded in the continuing Clean Air Plan."

Other municipalities now also want to try to get around driving bans. The decision on Wuppertal could be a boost.
