Transport sector in Germany complies with targets

The trade association en2x Fuels & Energie has calculated that transport in Germany is adhering to the set limits for pollutant emissions. The association calculates consumption based on the sale of fuels from cars, aircraft and ships.

The transport sector did not exceed the set target of 145 million tonnes in 2021. Already last year, the limit of 150 million tonnes was not cracked.  In 2022, the limit is set at only 140 million tonnes. By 2030, this limit will be lowered further and further. The Federal Environment Agency is responsible for compliance with the climate target.

At the beginning of the year, experts had still assumed that the limit would be significantly exceeded this year due to the resurgence in travel. By 2040, at least 88 percent less greenhouse gas emissions must be emitted, and from 2045 the Climate Protection Act even stipulates greenhouse gas neutrality. After 2050, it is planned to emit no more greenhouse gases, but on the contrary to eliminate them.

The good data for this year should please the new Transport Minister Wissing (FDP). This way, he and many car drivers will avoid painful tightening of the rules in traffic and in the environmental zones. Because if they were exceeded, he would have to adopt an immediate programme to meet the climate targets of the Paris Agreement again.

But compliance with the values is due not least to the pandemic and the lockdowns in recent years. In addition, there are the already existing driving bans in the environmental zones, but also the many pop-up cycle paths that have been introduced during the year and have led to a reduction in CO2.
