Low emission zones in Denmark: Now cars also affected!

Green-Zones News

From 01.10.2023, diesel cars will also be subject to the environmental zone regulations in Copenhagen, Aalborg, Aarhus and Odense. All Euro 5 or Euro 4 vehicles with particulate filters - registered before January 2011 - will then need to be registered in order to drive legally in a Danish low emission zone. Register your car with Green-Zones now and avoid hefty fines!

Four Green Zones were established in Denmark between 2008 and 2010, in Copenhagen, Aalborg, Aarhus and Odense, to reduce traffic emissions and consequently air pollution. All these environmental zones are permanently valid and apply to diesel buses, vans and trucks - i.e. vehicles of classes M2 and M3 as well as N1, N2 and N3. Since July 2020, these no longer need an environmental badge, but registration in order to obtain access authorisation to the environmental zones. M1 vehicles, i.e. normal passenger cars and motor homes, remained unaffected by the regulations and were simply allowed to enter - regardless of how old the vehicle is or what fuel it uses. However, this will change from October this year - because a new minimum standard for diesel cars has been decided.

From then on, these cars will also have to comply with the rules of the environmental zones and be subject to registration. Petrol cars will continue to be excluded from the driving bans. From 01.10.2023, all diesel cars (M1) registered before January 2011 - and which have emission class Euro 5 or Euro 4 with particle filter retrofitting - must be registered in order to be able to stay legally in a Danish environmental zone. Diesels in the categories Euro 4 - without particle filter - and Euro 3, as well as Euro 2, Euro 1 and Euro 0 will not be allowed to enter the zone at all from next October. Cars registered after 2011, on the other hand, are automatically registered and may drive within the environmental zones without having to do anything.

Otherwise, a fine of between 1,000 and 1,500 Danish kroner - between approx. 135 and 200 euros - will be due for violations.

So, are you driving in Denmark in the future and do you need to register your car?  Registration is not compulsory until October. However, you can already register your vehicle at Green-Zones! This way you are well prepared for your next trip to Denmark.

The rules of the Danish environmental zones can indeed be somewhat complex and confusing. If you have any questions, you can always contact our service team. You can also find more information about the relevant rules to be observed on our website.
