Low emission zone 3 in Gothenburg: buses are exempt

The introduction of low emission zones is a hotly debated topic in Sweden, especially the introduction of low emission zone 3, which excludes certain vehicles from certain parts of the city. In Gothenburg and Stockholm, political decision-makers have different views on how this low emission zone should be implemented. While Stockholm wants to include all vehicles in the low emission zone, Gothenburg has decided to exclude buses from this regulation.

The Swedish capital Stockholm has set itself an ambitious goal: From 2025, petrol and diesel cars are to be banned from the city centre. The EU Commission has given the green light for the introduction of a new low emission zone. But is the plan really feasible or just another symbolic political measure by the green-red coalition?


Stockholm dares to ban combustion engines from 2025!

Stockholm is the first city in Europe to ban combustion engines from part of the city centre with a comprehensive zero-emission zone. After persistent protests prevented such a ban zone in the historic old town of Gamla Stan, the so-called "Low Emission Zone 3" for the city centre is now a done deal.


Stockholm environmental zone tightens controls massively

Up to now, only police officers have been able to impose fines for wrong vehicles in Stockholm's environmental zone. Since they cannot check all vehicles, the Public Order Office - at the request of the Greens - is now to take over this work. In order to do this, however, Sweden must adapt the legal framework for monitoring the zone.
