2025 - the year of low emission zones in the Netherlands?

Green-Zones News

The introduction of new low emission zones in the Netherlands is causing discussion and uncertainty among drivers. Next year, 15 new low emission zones will be introduced, but they will initially only apply to commercial vehicles. This means that car drivers do not have to fear any restrictions when entering these zones.

Existing low emission zones in cities such as Amsterdam, Arnhem, The Hague and Rotterdam also apply to diesel cars. From January 1, 2025, diesel vehicles must meet at least the Euro 5 standard to be allowed to enter these low emission zones. Local authorities can decide for themselves where and how strictly they introduce low emission zones.

Exceptions to the regulations can be made for certain older diesel vehicles that are considered classic cars. For example, cars older than 40 years are allowed to enter a low emission zone. It should be noted that the environmental zones are becoming stricter and older diesel vehicles may no longer be allowed to enter.

Drivers should know which vehicles are allowed to enter the low emission zones and which rules they must observe in order to avoid possible fines.
